Identity Theft: Count the ways

I received an e-mail message from “Paypal” not to long ago. The e-mail stated that PayPal needed me to update and verify my security information for their database. I didn’t. One of the sentences in the e-mail read:

“Complete the necessary verification tasks within 5 days, or your account might get temporarily suspended.”

That didn’t sound like the PayPal I’ve been doing business with for several years. The grammar of “your account might get temporarily suspended” raised an alarm bell. Also the logo while quite professional looked odd.

But the obvious giveaway was knowing Paypal would never contact me at an e-mail address I never gave them. I could have become a victim of a technique called phishing. Just another form of Identity theft.

The effort criminals put into stealing your identity staggers the imagination.

With Phishing also called brand spoofing, criminals set up phony but legitimate looking websites then spam you with e-mail like the one described above in the hopes of catching a percentage of Internet users. No reputable business will ever ask ask for your personal information via e-mail.

Phishing just became a parent to a newborn child called “pharming”. Hackers plant phony information into DNS servers. This allows them to match domain names with the database of IP addresses maintained by various web hosting companies. In other words you type in a web address press enter and get rerouted to bogus websites where identity thieves are waiting to grab any of your information.

2003 saw identity thieves target Ebay account holders, this year it’s Paypal’s turn but any company with a database of information remains a target.

Choicepoint a veritable clearinghouse for the insurance industry finds themselves trying to explain how identity thieves tapped into their system to defraud 145,000 customers across the U.S. Investigators in California place that number closer to a half a million.

The hackers apparently used previously stolen identities to apply for and receive business licenses then bought information from ChoicePoint whose database totals 19 billion public records.

The FTC estimates that this year alone identity theft will cost the business community 4.2 billion dollars and 8 billion by the end of 2006.

Easy access to computers provide more chances for identity theft but the majority of cases according to the Better Business Bureau happen offline. Mail fraud, public spying known as “shoulder surfing” or telephone scams that target the elderly contribute greatly to this epidemic.

Unfortunately senior citizens face another threat known as the “sweetheart scam” in which a criminal offers to run errands or do chores around the house for the express purpose of taking control of the victim’s finances.

Taking control of someone’s finances can also happen in a restaurant, department store or any legitimate place of business . When a clerk swipes your card twice without your knowledge then stores the information for later use this is know as skimming. Often the clerk will make a duplicate card with your info to go on a buying spree or sell it on the black market. The illegal selling of credit card information as you might have already guessed is big business.

Identity theft has forced many financial institutions to revamp their ATM’s due to criminal rigging. A person uses the ATM but after putting in the pin# the machine keeps the card. Usually when the person goes to report it, the thief strikes, taking card, pin # and most importantly the victim’s identity.

The methods of madness can include something simple like going thru your trash known as dumpster diving or an elaborate hoax similar to the one reported by the Associated Press.

A family in the Pacific Northwest posed as tax preparers and used stolen identities to go on buying sprees across several states that included million dollar homes and luxury vehicles. According to authorities, since the thieves stole the social security # of children as well as adults, the damage won’t be fully known until these young people start applying for credit later on.

Law Enforcement officials believe the next step with this criminal outfit involved applying for health care positions. Hospitals and doctor offices provide a wealth of personal information. Perfect for Identity thieves

These methods along with old fashioned robbery show why identity theft according to the Department of Justice maintains it’s ranking as the number one and fastest growing crime in the US for 5 consecutive years. Unfortunately, it will maintain that status for the near future.

Top 10 Ways To Protect Yourself From Online Identity Theft

Identity theft is becoming a bigger problem as more and more people are making the internet a bigger part of their lives. People who are new to the online medium often fall prey to ‘phishing’ or other internet identity theft schemes. In many cases the ‘phishing party’ uses your credit card to order goods for them selves, in other cases they will apply for credit cards, set up bank accounts, and take advantage of your good credit rating. Correcting these issues involves a lot of time energy and stress, so here are ten tips to help you from becoming a victim of identity theft.

Use a disposable email account. Keep your business or personal email account just for business or personal communication. If you are going to be making purchases online, joining newsgroups, or subscribing to mailing lists and ezines use a disposable email account. There are many online free accounts such as yahoo, hotmail or grail, and most of them can interface with popular email clients like outlook or outlook express. Use one of them for all of your shopping transactions.

Disguise your online identity. If your real name in Mary Smith try to avoid using email accounts with name like msmith@example.com when dealing with people you don’t know and trust. If you were born in 1972 don’t chose msmith1972@example.com as your email account.

Use different level passwords. Use one password for your personal information, use another for your business accounts and a third for your disposable email accounts or mailing lists you sign up for. Don’t use sequential passwords like password1 for personal use password2 for business, and password 3 for disposable accounts.

Use strong passwords. Don’t use your birthdates, year you were married, or your children’s birthdates. Avoid choosing passwords that consist entirely of letters or numbers. Also try to avoid using passwords that are actual words. The best passwords are mnemonic phrases like “my father ate three apples for breakfast”. Take the first letter of each word and convert the number into numbers and you end up with “mfa3a4b”.

Rotate your passwords. You should change your passwords every 6 to 12 months. If you suspect your passwords have been compromised change them as a safety precaution.

Use only one credit card for all of your online purchases. If any of your other credit cards have online transactions you know they are fraudulent. If you see offline purchases for your online credit card you also know they are fraudulent.

Use credit cards instead of debit cards. While many debit cards now offer online purchase protection it’s easier to dispute fraudulent charges than to recover debit card funds that have already been spent.

When you make purchases online make sure your transactions are secure. In the address bar you should see “https” and not “http”. There should also be small lock icon in your browser. If this is your first purchase from the company make sure the issuing company is someone you have heard of like Verisign, or Thawte.

Check a company’s privacy policy. When you make your first transaction make sure your check the privacy policy, look for logos from consumer groups like Trust-E and the better business bureau. Click the logos to make sure they are authentic.

Never open or fill out email requests for you to update you account or credit card settings via email. These are ‘phishing’ scams people use to try and secure your personal information. Many of them are growing increasingly sophisticated and go to great lengths to look exactly like the companies website using their exact logo.

One of these cultural hurdles can simply be related to the different alphabets and “character sets”. How can you communicate with a foreign country if you can’t even type in language?

A reader emailed me today with a question on the readability of different language character sets. This questions deserves more than just a quick answer.

Here is her question is:

We are adding Russian to our website and our usual visitors do not have Cyrillic type, thus cannot view the Russian area. Have you had this problem with any languages and if so is there a way to solve it without using PDFs or art?

There are two easy way out.

• Using a PDF file
• Saving each page as images are options

Both of these solutions allow most people to read your Russian characters. But each has disadvantages.

• PDF files can be big and some users will not download a PDF.
• The text in an image is just an image, so the search engines will never find it.

Installing The Cyrillic Type For Internet Explorer And Firefox

There is one thing to do first.

• On YOUR page, make sure that you identify your content as being in Cyrillic.

If you want to do this with a different character set, this is where you can get the full list of Windows character sets. There is a link to the Microsoft site in the resource box at the end of this article.

How To Set Your Computer To Read Foreign Languages

I am not going to tell you how do this on all computer operating systems and all versions of those systems.

Here are changes you will want to make on the two most common operating systems in use. The examples used are for Cyrillic.

In Windows XP

To Be Able To View A Different Character Set Such As Russian:

• Go to your Control and double click on ‘Regional and Language Options which will open a window.
• From this new window select ‘Advanced’ and a list will appear with supported languages.
• From this list select the languages which match the version on of the languages that you wish to see.
• At the top of the list is Cyrillic which you should select.
• Lower on the list there are other versions of Cyrillic which you should also select.
• In addition, it is safer to include the language Ukrainian.

If you are doing this for languages using something other than the Cyrillic alphabet, it is better to select more options than you think necessary - other people can make mistakes when defining their language.

To Be Able To Type In Russian:

• Go to your Control and double click on ‘Regional and Language Options’ which will open a window.
• From this new window select ‘Languages’ and then ‘Details’.
• Clicking ‘Details’ will open a new window ‘Text Services and Input Languages’.
• In this window select ‘Add’ and yet another new window will open.
• In this window, from the ‘Input Language’ drop down menu select ‘Russian’.
• The ‘Keyboard layout/IME’ drop down menu will change to Russian.

The results in the ‘Text Services and Input Languages’ will be an additional keyboard listed which you can select when typing in Russian.

In Windows Vista

In Vista there is only one process to both read and type in a different character set.

• From the Control Panel select the ‘Regional and Language Options’ icon which will open a new window.
• From this new window select ‘Keyboards and Languages’, then ‘Change Keyboard’, which will open a new window.
• In the new window click ‘Add’ (yet another window) and from this final window select ‘Russian’.

You should now be able to type in Russian in Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and most other applications. You can switch to ‘Russian’ by either clicking on the ‘Ru’ icon from your task bar or by using Alt + Shift to select your language.

And likewise, once you have finished typing in Russian, you can switch back to English by clicking on ‘En’ or using Alt + Shift again.

In some programs such as AOL and old versions of Word (95) you will also need to choose a specific Cyrillic font such as ‘Arial Cyr’.

Easier Than It Seems

Enabling your computer to view and read different character sets will make it easier for you to do market research and communicate within that particular language and country.

Remember that other computers outside of the country in question may not be set up for those languages. To get around this problem you can use PDFs and images to transmit your message in the different character set.

This way all of your readers will be able to see your message, in Cyrillic for example, instead of thinking there is a mistake either on your website or their computer.

Reporting Tools for Microsoft Great Plains – overview for developers

Looks like Microsoft Great Plains becomes more and more popular, partly because of Microsoft muscles behind it. Now it is targeted to the whole spectrum of horizontal and vertical market clientele. Small companies use Small Business Manager (which is based on the same technology – Great Plains Dexterity dictionary and runtime), Great Plains Standard on MSDE is for small to midsize clients, and then Great Plains serves the rest of the market up to big corporations. There are several reporting tools available and you definitely need to know which one to use for different types of reports.

If you are developer who is asked: how do we create report for Microsoft Great Plains – read this and you will have the clues on where to look further.

1. Great Plains Report Writer (ReportWriter) – this is built-in reporting tool. All the original report in Great Plains are written in ReportWriter. ReportWriter itself is Dexterity module. You should use this tool if you would like to modify existing Great Plains reports, such as Blank Invoice Form - here you can place your company logo, change the positioning, fonts, colors, etc. ReportWriter will allow you also do new reports - simple option if you want to export all the records from one Great Plains table - use it. New report, however doesn’t have interface where you would enter parameters - so it is not useful for real custom reports. Another limitation of ReportWriter - you can not do cross-modules report - when you need sales and purchasing info on the same report for example.

2. FRx. This is excellent tool when deal with financial reporting - it works on the General Ledger level (Balance sheet, P&L, Cash Flow Statement, etc.). It also allows you to do multiple companies consolidation - when you do consolidated Balance Sheet (with inter-companies transactions elimination).

3. Smart List - Export to Excel – this is nice feature in Great Plains - you could create a list with simple criteria and then export it to Excel.

4. Crystal Reports. It gives you unlimited functionality. Obviously flexibility requires you to know Great Plains table structure: Launch Great Plains and go to Tools->Resource Description->Tables. Find the table in the proper series. If you are looking for the customers – it should be RM00101 – customer master file. If you need historical Sales Order Processing documents – they are in SOP30200 – Sales History Header file, etc. Create ODBC connection to GP Company database. Use the same technique as when you create standard ODBC connection for GP workstation – but change default database to targeted company database. Create SQL Query to probe the data – we always recommend tuning your query and see that you are getting adequate results – in any case – Crystal Report is just a nice tool to show the results of your query.

5. Direct Web Publishing off Great Plains databases – yes - it is easy now with Visual Studio.Net and you can hire good programmers. This is good - Microsoft Business Solutions products: Great Plains, Solomon, Navision and Axapta will be integrated into so called Microsoft Business Portal - which will have web interface - you can get the idea if you look at Microsoft CRM web client - so derecti web publishing is good taste.

6. SQL Queries. If you have SQL background - this is great field for you. You know - with properly formatted SQL query you can realize simple EDI export/import for the integration with legacy systems.
